During the 1980s, mainstream Hindi movies were going through a tough time. The decade was most often referred to as the “lost decade” and is remembered for its “trashy” content. Some commentators have called this a “blot” on the history of Indian cinema.

But during the same decade, a parallel movement was brewing and a new kind of cinema emerged- often referred to as B-Grade movies. These movies had an important influence on mainstream movies by introducing genres like horror and sex.

In this video, we trace the journey of B-grade movies from its rise in the 1980s, its evolution in the 1990s and its fall in the 2000s, and its rise again in the form of OTT.
