The Millionairess (1960) Sophia Loren & Peter Sellers British Romantic Comedy | ArtHouse Media

The Millionairess (1960) is a loose adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Play of the same name. The film stars Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers and was hugely successful when it was released. The film was one of the top grossing films in Great Britain in 1960 and played well in Canada and the USA. A comedy duet between Loren and Sellers was a chart hit in the UK with top record sales and radio airplay. The song was conceived and produced by future Beatles producer George Martin.

While a white actor (Sellers) playing an Indian character would never happen today, the British-Indian culture in the 1960’s could not identify with the character either. Nevertheless, the film helped propel Sellers career from stand-up comedy to films.
